Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

I have lots of them!! Mostly related to the ridiculous spring weather. I officially dislike the NW!!! Had I known the weather difference between the south and north of Calgary I would have re-considered my decision to move to the great white north. I love my house but I just can't believe how it will snow 1cm in downtown and 40 million cm in the NW!!! Exaggeration a little but still! We had a full out blizzard at my house- the roads were barely passable for cars. It took me almost 2 hours to get to work yesterday. I get downtown and even though it is still super windy there is barely any snow on the ground. WTH??????

So I know you are all thinking "you have a spin trainer and a treadmill in your basement, go use them!!!" Well the power goes out every time there is a slight amount of wind. Don't exhale too much or else the power will go out!!! Last Thursday the power was out for 5 hours in the evening- apparently a pole was on fire. Then on Wednesday the power was out in the evening again for a few hours. Again the power went out in the middle of the night and didn't come on until 6am. I get up at 5:30am to get ready for work. Yes, I paid the bill so it's not that!!!

Anyway there were lots of Enmax trucks out yesterday and they had part of the road blocked off so I hope they were upgrading the lines or something so the next time I sigh the power doesn't go off.

I am not lying- here is the story. I did see one Enmax truck pulling a snowmobile so they probably had to use it to fix a pole in a farmers field somewhere.

Anyway those are my excuses- I wasn't even going to attempt an outdoor run with the 80km/hr winds. I WILL workout this weekend so stay tuned!!

We are going to see Tom Green tomorrow night. I am slightly scared. I hope he doesn't do anything too disturbing.

Motivation by Music

Well the weather in Calgary has pretty much turned to cr@p!! It is currently snowing/sleeting with a high of 1 C. Fantastic workout weather- NOT!! Guess I am stuck with indoor workouts.

I almost always listen to music on my runs (not bike rides). I find it really helps me forget about how much longer I have to run and if a good song comes on I feel like I can run forever!! I don't usually need this sort of motivation on my bike rides, however I have been known to sing to myself on some difficult climbs!!

I am not very tech savvy- I usually need hubby to help me figure out how to use Itunes, the PVR, deal with printer issues, etc. I just don't have the patience. So he showed me how to purchase songs on Itunes last night and I made myself an awesome new playlist!! I like upbeat, pop type music to run to. As I was downloading music, we watched the Glee episode from last week- The Power of Madonna. LOVE IT!!! I love Glee!!

So of course I had to download that album and add it to my playlist! Some of the songs are good for running, some are a little too slow. Once I put together a bunch of songs (and Glee was over) I HAD to go for a run to listen to my new playlist! Luckily I have a treadmill in my basement since it was starting to get dark out. I ran for 42 minutes rocking out to the tunes!! It was great!

One of the only things I don't like about triathlon is the rules against earphone use during a race. I totally get why those rules are in place but sometimes I just need my musical motivation!!! The last kilometre of the run I could really use a power song!! I am not the type of person to know all the words to a song so when I have to sing to myself its about 4 words of the chorus- not very motivating!! I would love to do one of those marathons/half marathons where they have a bunch of entertainment along the race route.

I still have the second half of my new playlist to listen to tonight. I am thinking of doing another brick workout since it is doubtful I will be able to get out on my bike this weekend... more snow and rain.
Looks like hubby's plans to work on our backyard deck and fence will be on hold again also.

Workout Success!

Yesterday late morning I managed to squeeze in a 40 minute run around the neighborhood. It was pretty chilly out- around 6 C. I tend to warm up quickly when running so I just wore a long sleeve technical shirt (same one that Leana talked about awhile back from Lululemon- love it!) and capris. I actually started to feel too warm towards the end of the run.

Good thing I went for my run early since it started snowing/sleeting in the afternoon. Nasty winds blowing snow all around. The roads aren't bad but the snow has definitely stuck to the grass and houses.

So yesterday's snow pretty much changed my plans to get out on my bike today. I haven't been on my own bike for awhile (since last season) and haven't been to spin since early March. I can't believe I never put my bike on the spin trainer until today!! I had so much fun! I planned to bike then run, and hubby ran then biked (only have one spin trainer). He popped the Real Rides- Ironman Canada in the DVD player and I rode to that for 45 minutes. What a great workout!! I loved it! I think I am going to buy more of those workout DVDs as they are really helpful and a fantastic workout. I was sweating so much!!

After 45 minutes I jumped on the treadmill and ran for 25 minutes. My legs felt great and I was only planning on going for 15-20 minutes but I felt so good I pushed it to 25 minutes.

Only 2 more months until Wasa triathlon so I really have to be serious about training. No more slacking!!

Tomorrow I will be running- not sure if it will be inside or outside yet. Probably around 40 minutes easy.

I'm Back!!!

Life sure has been busy the last few months. Busy NOT training I might add! My eye recovery took longer than I expected so by the time I could see again for more than 5 minutes at a time I had to buckle down and get some studying done.
I am truly amazed by those that devote their lives to furthering their education. Don't get me wrong- I love to learn and challenge myself but the stress of trying to cram in all that info into my brain while working full time was wearing on me. Something had to go and training didn't make the cut.

So I am two months away from my first triathlon of the season, my first Olympic triathlon ever and I am starting back at square one!! Not the most ideal situation but I feel better having completed my course, my eyes are healed and I can training without stressing about what I should be doing.

On another note, hubby and I are supposed to be in Europe right now. That lovely volcano eruption in Iceland derailed our plans so we are stuck at home for now. We have re booked for May 13th so in 3 short weeks we will be back on our way. We are a little disappointed to not be there now but glad that we avoided the chaos that is going on with flights to and from Europe right now.

Back to training- I need to make up another training program for myself. Hubby and I decided that UCTC isn't worth it for the spring session since almost all the training is outside and we can do that for free at our convenience. I am sad to not be training with a big group but I dislike the rigid schedule. The only challenge will be to find a decent pool nearby but that won't break the bank. I miss my Canyon Meadows pool in the south! I can't believe the lack of city pools in NW Calgary!

I have lots of blogs to catch up on now! Reading about everyone else's training should motivate me!
