Busy Working Out!!

I have been a busy lady working out and getting ready for my trip. Usually a blog hiatus means no workouts, but this time I have lots to report!!!

On Monday, I FINALLY got to the pool. The Thornhill city pool is actually pretty nice (for a city pool). Of course I was running late due to another event that ran late so I only swam for 40 minutes. I didn't even bother counting laps- I probably did 600m. I sure noticed the swim break. My technique is weak, endurance is poor so this race is not going to be pretty. 


On Tuesday, I rode my bike on the trainer for an hour. It would have been a beautiful night to go ride outside but my busy schedule prevented me from taking the time to pack up my bike, drive somewhere rideable, get a ride in, drive back and be presentable for a late dinner. Oy!!

I had some bridesmaid duties to take care of. My dress came in and I was really worried that it was going to be a bit tight. It is quite form fitting in the hip, tummy, butt area and those are my problem areas. I was concerned that my break in training would have affected how the dress fits but the good news is that it is too big!! I certainly didn't lose weight though- its just the terrible sizing chart that bridesmaid dress designers use to trick you into order a dress wayyyy too big for you so you have to spend a million dollars on alterations!! I know their tricks!! A strapless dress still motivates me to workout and tone up.

On Wednesday, I had a couple errands to run to get ready for our trip. I wasn't home until 6:30pm so I continued packing and squeezed a run in around 8pm. It was a beautiful evening for a run, around 17 C. I wore shorts and a tank top so definitely a change from my run on Sunday! We ran a tempo run for just under 30 minutes. I felt quite strong for the 1st half and then slowed down for the last 10 minutes.

In other news, I signed up for a couple more races!!

On July 3rd, I will be running the Race for Pace 10km at Glenmore Park. It is 3 weeks after Wasa and will keep me motivated continue training.

In a moment of insanity, I also signed up for my FIRST half-marathon!!! I don't know what I was thinking but I am definitely motivated to train now!

I signed up for the Canmore Rocky Mountain Half Marathon on September 12th. That gives me plenty of time to work on my endurance and speed. I am super excited and terrified at the same time! I didn't feel too bad after the 10km on Sunday so I figured I would be ready to do double the distance in 4 months.


Tonight we leave for Europe! Our flight leaves at 6pm and so far it looks on time. I am sooo excited! We are going to France and Spain. I will probably have limited access to the internet so I won't be blogging much, if at all.  Catch ya later!!

Long Run at Edworthy Park

Happy Mothers Day to all the moms out there. Today we had my mom and step dad over for brunch. It was nice to see them as I feel like I don't get to see them very often anymore.

Hubby was busy moving the 3 truck loads of compost from the front yard to the backyard this morning before my parents came over. And it was snowing...

We made plans with some friends to go for a 10k run at Edworthy Park. They live in the deep south and we live in the far north so Edworthy was kinda in the middle. The pathways take you to downtown and also through some woodsy areas so it was a nice change from the usually neighborhood runs. As soon as our brunch guests left we zoomed off to meet our friends. I had a hard time deciding what to wear because it had been snowing here earlier and the weather forecast was 4 C. I decided to wear long tights, tank top, long sleeve technical shirt, and a windbreaker. Of course by the time we got to the park it was 10 C and the sun was shining. About 3k in I was boiling and had to take my windbreaker off. Next time I think it would be better to wear a short sleeve shirt under the windbreaker so that if I get too warm I am still wearing sleeves. A bit of a clothing fail.

The run was great! I took it pretty easy in the beginning because it was my first 10k in awhile and I didn't want to start too quickly. Luckily our friends were recovering from their own Saturday night self-inflicted pain so they didn't have a problem going slow. I was feeling great around 6k and even mentioned to my friend that I didn't feel sore or tired at all. Of course as soon as those words came out of my mouth my legs instantly started to feel sore!
The last km back to the car was a little painful but there were lots of other people and dogs on the pathway to keep my mind off my aching legs. I kept reminding myself that the faster I run, the closer the car is. The run took about 1:17 hours. That's about what I expected. I  hope to get that time down closer to 1:05 or less by the end of the summer!

After 10 minutes of stretching we parted ways and hurried home to get ready to go back to the in-laws for Mothers Day dinner.

The weekend went by very quickly but I am happy that I got all my planned workouts in and they went well!! Tomorrow we have to hit the pool!! I don't want to but I NEED to. It's not gonna be pretty but I want to be somewhat prepared for the race.

Saddle Sore No More!!

On the schedule today was a longer ride on the spin trainer. It is actually really nice outside today (nice compared to the snow and winder of earlier this week) but hubby is busy getting free compost so I rode inside rather than going on the highway by myself.

I was actually thinking how odd it is that I don't like to ride by myself, even when I lived by Fish Creek Park and there were lots of pathways. I think I am mostly worried about getting a flat and not having the confidence to change it myself! However I have no problem racing by myself. I guess I am not really alone though so maybe that's why I don't have any issues.

Anyway, I did 1.5 hours on the spin trainer. I followed yet another Real Rides DVD. It was a tough workout!! They said to keep your cadence around 80 and I was struggling for 70!! I wore my heart rate monitor and my HR was always been 145-155 bpm which is pretty high on the bike for me. My legs feel a like jello right now but that's good! My butt didn't hurt nearly as much- I actually didn't think about it until an hour into the workout. As I suspected I just needed to do a longer ride!!

Only 5 more days till Europe! I think I will have hubby take our bikes in later this week for a tune up so they are ready to hit the road when we get back from our trip. Our race is only 2 weeks after we get back home so we have no time to waste! Maybe we can rent bikes in France to tour around on!

Tomorrow we are going for a 10k run with some friends on Edworthy Park. I am slightly nervous since I haven't done 10k in awhile but I am sure I will be fine. I need to start putting in some longer runs so now is a good time.

Saddle Sore!

I was lazy and didn't go to the pool last night. I procrastinated all night and finally dragged my butt off the couch and onto my bike.


I popped in another DVD of Real Rides Ironman Canada and then proceeded to talk on the phone the entire time!! I followed the workout but I will admit that I didn't workout as hard as if I had been fully concentrating on it! Anyway it was a good hour workout. My seat bones are sooo sore. I really need to toughen up! I don't remember it taking this long for my rear to get used to the saddle. This weekend I am going to do a ride that is 1.5 hours long so hopefully that will help.

Note I was on a spin trainer (not the road- its snowing here!) and my bike is blue, not pink.

Another winter storm on its way...

Oh the joys of Calgary- we have a winter storm warning right now. Well at least the farmers will be happy with all the moisture.

Another run on the treadmill tonight. Went hard for 25 minutes and then my dinner was ready so I had to go turn off the oven before I burned the house down. Hubby is in Vancouver right now so I have to fend for myself. Putting something in the oven is about the extent of my cooking skills.

I hope to get to the pool tomorrow, assuming the storm doesn't snow me in!

Can't think of a creative title...

So Tom Green actually wasn't that bad last night. There were a few tasteless jokes but that's to be expected at any comedy club. He didn't pick on the crowd that much except for one table that was obviously annoying and loud.

Brick workout was on the schedule today. Didn't get a chance to check out the highway shoulder conditions but it is supposed to thundershower this afternoon. Unless I got up really early in the morning (I am not a morning person and I have to get up super early during the week so I don't feel bad about sleeping in on the weekend) an outdoor bike ride wasn't happening.

Hubby got on the spin trainer first and I did my run first. I ran for 30 minutes and then we switched. We watched/road another portion of Ironman Canada bike route. I ended up on the bike for about 40 minutes. Pretty good workout overall.

I am going to have to increase the intensity of the workouts in the next 2 weeks on the bike. We are still planning on doing a couple runs while on our vacation but we won't be doing any biking. I have to get my rides up to 2-2.5 hours each time so that I don't totally bonk at Wasa!! 6 weeks to go!

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. It doesn't sound like the weather is going to be much warmer this week. Hubby is going to Vancouver for business Monday-Wednesday so I will be working out by myself while he gets to run the sea wall in Vancouver!! Jealous!!

Vancouver Marathon is today!! I have a friend who is running it- I am sure she will do great!! We were in Vancouver this time last year for a long weekend. It was beautiful and I so wish I could live there!

April's Snow Brings May's Flowers!

So pretty all the snow from the massive snow storm 2 days ago is melted. Yup, gotta love Calgary weather. Crazy a$$ snowstorm one day, +11 C the next. It was sunny and beautiful yesterday and same goes for today.

Went for a noon run outside!!! There are still a few puddles to avoid here and there and my backyard is still a mud pit. I wore capris, t shirt and long sleeve technical sweater. I was sweatin'! I had to take my sweater off about 20 minutes in cuz I was boiling. I expected it to be windy out and it was calm as can be. Hubby and I ran for about 35 minutes.

Lots of people out today doing their backyards- fences, decks, landscaping. The builders are busy building houses for our neighbors to move into.

What a beautiful day!! I love May!!

We will be doing a brick tomorrow. Not sure if we will attempt biking outdoors yet- have to check out the highway shoulders first.
