Gentle Prenatal Aquatic Fitness Class

Yesterday was my first prenatal aquatic fitness class. I have spent a fair amount of time at pools over the last few years while training for triathlons but sadly I haven't spent much time at all this year in the water.

The pool that the class is held at is actually one that I did a triathlon at two years ago so being there brought back some great memories. Thankfully I was less nervous this time!

The class was held in a deep water pool and we all used noodles to keep us afloat. I think this class is similar to what an aquasize class would be like. It was nice to be working out with other pregnant women. This class is a lot different than my other swim classes because we could actually socialize and workout at the same time! Our instructor encouraged us to meet other women which is nice.

The only bad part about the class is that I kept getting foot and calf cramps!! They were way worse than what I ever got in previous swim sessions. The instructor said to not point my toes which I am sure I wasn't but the cramps wouldn't go away! Thank god for that noodle or else I would have drowned!

Any other tips for preventing the cramps?

~Three Things Thursday~

1. Look what I found!!!! Candy Corn!!! I restrained myself and only bought 1 container. I think that's enough sugar for one pregnant lady! They are so good! Hubby said they tasted like drops of icing... I think he is right!
Sugary goodness!

2. After work yesterday I had a prenatal massage which was heavenly.  I decided to continue with the relaxing trend and did 40 minutes of prenatal yoga at home. It has been a few weeks since I did yoga last and I definitely noticed that things are less limber. Must keep it up a few times a week. I think I need to get a block too because the belly is starting to get in the way of some poses.

3. Yesterday when I was in Walmart picking up my beloved Candy Corn, I ran into my pregnant running buddy Kristen that I haven't seen since our last race in May!! She didn't even know I was pregnant!! So we exchanged a bunch of stories and decided that we are going to start stroller walking next year with our babies!! I think this will be the perfect way to socialize with other mommies, while working out. Now if we can just get Calgary weather to cooperate with us!!

19 Weeks: I think I've popped!

How big is Baby N?

Weight gain? I am down 2 pounds from last week, so 5 pounds total gain. I am sure it has to do with overindulging while on vacation.

Maternity Clothing? I bought another pair of jeans and am debating returning them... I thought I needed one longer pair to wear with heels and one shorter pair to wear with flats but do I really need a longer pair? I only wear jeans to work on Fridays and on the weekends. I think it would be better to invest in another pair of dress pants since I will wear those more often. I have a few weeks to decide...

Cravings? Candy Corn!!!!  I will be packing on the pounds now that Alison informed me that candy corn is now available by the bucket!!! Thankssomuch!

Symptoms? Slightly emotional.Wahhhhh!!

Sleep? So far, so good! No need for extra pillows or anything yet.

Workouts? Last few weeks have been ca-razy so workouts have suffered. Last week, I walked 5K, ran/walked 4.5K, and walked 4K at Melissa's.

What I am excited for? Getting ready for our Baby Girl!! Nursery prep is in the beginning stages and hopefully in the next 2 weeks the room will be empty and ready for painting- once I decide on a colour that is!

Baby Purchases? I have restrained myself but hubby apparently can't!! He bought a pink chandelier to hang in the nursery for his princess!!

Memorable Pregnancy Moments? Finding out we are having a GIRL!! After years of thinking we would only ever have boys, I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong. I am feeling the kicks stronger and more frequently now which is the best feeling ever! I love they we can refer to the baby as her, instead of it! I feel more bonded to the baby now knowing the gender.

Wish list? Endless budget to decorate the nursery, and outfit myself.. Lottery ticket??

Pregzilla Moments? Yelling at my computer because it won't work properly. I may have shed a few tears over this too.

Feeling so behind...

After the whirlwind last month, I am trying to get back on track with working out again. I need workout endorphins ASAP!!

Thankfully we don't have quite as much planned for the next few weeks (we shall see how long that lasts...) so I shouldn't have a problem scheduling in some sweat time. My gentle prenatal aquatic class starts this Thursday so it will be nice to try something new!

While the weight gain hasn't been too bad, I have definitely noticed a loss of definition in my legs, arms, back and  stomach (obviously!!). Need to start hitting those weights more regularly!

Last night I did 30 minutes of a Ripped workout. It felt good to light weights but man I am weak!! Is it too ambitious of me to hope to be stronger during/after pregnancy than before? Obviously I won't go crazy and will listen to my body (hence the short 30 min workout instead of 45 min like planned).

Anyway, my goal is to workout 4-5 times a week. I think that is completely achievable as long as I don't have insane week/ends like these past few ones.

~What I did this Weekend~

Before I talk about my crazy busy weekend, we have lots of great news in our family that I wasn't able to share until today! Both my brothers-in-law got engaged in the last two weeks!!! Woohoo!! Finally some official sisters-in-law!! After 30 years of my mother-in-law being the only girl in the family, in a span 2 weeks the boys became officially outnumbered (when you include our news of Baby Girl N!)

On Friday, after some drinks (virgin for me)  with some co-workers, we had a mini bachelorette party for my soon-to-be sister-in-law. It was low-key get together at my in-laws.

Saturday came way too quickly, and we were off to Banff for Melissa's Road Race with Leigh and Mr. D. Both Leigh and my hubby were doing the half marathon and Mr. D was doing the 10K.

Hubby and I- he was the 2:00hr pace bunny!

Leigh and I pre-race
This was one of the goal races for our half marathon group so there were lots of people we knew racing both distances. It was crazy busy and super hot that day. Usually in the mountains it is cool and breezy this time of the year but it was 26C!! Very unusual and tough for the racers.

Warm-up Crew
After sending all my friends off for a great race, another non-racing friend and I went to grab some breakfast.  It is about 1K to walk to main street from the start/finish area so in all that day I walked about 4+K. Not bad for an unintentional workout!

On my way back to the finish line to cheer in my friends, I heard someone shout my name. It was Runner Leana! I have been following her blog forever- I think it was one of the first ones I started following when I started running/triathlons a few years ago. We chatted briefly before I had to rush off to cheer. Very nice to meet you Leana!

Watching people finish a race, regardless of distance always brings tears to my eyes. I am such a sap but I am so inspired every time. There was one lady who got a massive calf cramp with only 100m or so to the finish line. She could barely stand and someone helped try to massage the cramp so she could just get to the finish line. The crowd went crazy cheering her on, encouraging her through her immense pain and she was finally able to drag her cramped leg to the finish line.

Luckily with hubby being the 2 hour pacer, I knew when to watch out for him. He was very easy to spot with his big sign and pink bunny ears!! Even though I was ringing the massive cowbell like crazy, and shouting his name, he was so focused on his "job" that he didn't hear or see me at all!

Hubby top right edge of road
Best 2 hour pace bunny ever!!
Soon after, Leigh came sprinting down. I was shouting her name and ringing that bell but she was pretty focused on finishing too. I was so proud to see her finish and with a kick-butt time! I only hope that one day I can run as fast as she does!

Leigh in the blue right by the flag

Too fast for me to get a close up shot!
It was amazing to watch so many of my friends and fellow runners race. I told hubby that next year I am racing and he can spectate with the baby!

We had to race back to Calgary to get ready for... my brother-in-law's wedding! Yes, it was a quick engagement (no, they don't have a bun in the oven). It was a beautiful, simple and intimate ceremony. I cried, as usual. It was a perfect evening and I am so very happy for them!!

Happy couple!
Hubby and I
Wedding cake made by the beautiful bride!

Thankfully on Sunday we didn't have a long run and instead we went for brunch for our clinic wind-up. So delicious!! I am so sad the clinic is almost over! I love running with this group. I won't be joining the next clinic but I will still run with them on practice days until the weather turns and it is too icy/snowy to run outside with a big ole belly.

Afterwards, hubby and I headed out to Ikea to look at some furniture for the nursery. Must get working on cleaning out my office to make room!!

I later met up with my mom, sis and aunt to watch "The Help." Amazing movie- I cried...again!! I can't wait to read the book. My sis said the movie may have been better than the book, which rarely happens.

It was a super fun, exciting, emotional and jam-packed weekend! I love every minute of it and made me realize how  lucky I am to have so many great people in my life. Love!!

Baby Haute Runner is a....

.... GIRL!!!!!

Baby Girl N!!
I am shocked!! While I didn't have any feelings either way about this pregnancy, I was convinced that I would only ever have boys! Hubby comes from a family of all boys, and overall more male than female relatives.

She cooperated very well so the tech was able to get all the measurements needed. She is perfectly healthy, with long arms and legs! She looks like she is boxing in the above picture!!

Here are some more pictures of our Baby Girl!! (Good God, I hope the tech isn't wrong!)

Waving her hand!

Long legs... for running?

Cute little baby feet!!!

Oh I am in love!!

Now the shopping, decorating and name picking begins!! Are we ever in trouble!!!

~Three Things Thursday~

1. Our Vancouver Island road trip was quite the adventure! I am working, slowly, on the recap but my spare time seems to be a premium right now so hopefully I can get it done sooner than later before I forget everything!

2. I have a cold :( I am usually a pretty healthy person and only get about 1 cold a year. My head feels like it is going to explode and I can't take anything to make myself feel better! Boo!!! It made my 4ishK run/walk last night a bit difficult as I couldn't breathe but it sure felt good to be out there!

3. Today, if all goes well, we will find out the baby's sex!!! I am so excited!!! I have no 'gut feeling' either way so it will be a total surprise for me!!! Any guesses???

18 Weeks: Much Anticipated!!

How big is Baby N?

Sweet Potato

Baby is yawning, hiccuping, twisting, rolling and kicking now!

Weight gain? 7 pounds total

Maternity Clothing? I found a cute maternity bathing suit to wear at my gentle prenatal aquatic fitness class that starts next week!! Looking forward to it!

Cravings? N/A

Symptoms? Need to pee every hour! So annoying- especially when driving. Also my skin isn't too happy right now but I am not sure if that is from the road trip/change of air or pregnancy...

Sleep? Had a few nights of interrupted sleep while on vacation but now that I am back in my own bed it's all good!

Workouts? Walking, walking and more walking while sightseeing all over Vancouver Island last week. I did do a 5K walk yesterday with my also preggo running instructor. After taking 2 weeks off running I need to ease back into it.

What I am excited for? Ultrasound this week when we find out the baby's sex!!! Fingers crossed baby isn't shy!! Can't wait to see the baby moving around on the screen again!

Memorable Pregnancy Moments? The first time hubby felt the baby kick! The baby is moving around lots now but a lot of the movements can't be felt from the outside yet so it was a good kick for him to feel it!

Wish list? Another few days off work so I can relax after our long road trip!

Pregzilla Moments? I think I have been pretty good...

This was after a day of travel so
 ignore the exhausted look!

17 Weeks: On Vacation!

How big is Baby N?
Baby is starting to pack on the weight now! Almost half way there!! How is that possible???

Weight gain? Dunno- don't have access to a scale but I am probably up a pound or two.

Maternity Clothing? Since I am on holidays, I have been living in Lululemon pants, capris and hoodies. Finally the investment has paid off!! Haha!!

Cravings? N/A This baby, like it's father, isn't picky and as long as it is fed on a regular basis it is happy.

Symptoms? Even with all the driving, the nausea seems to have subsided so hopefully it continues this way.

Sleep? Good, other than the middle of the night wake-ups for the bathroom.

Workouts? It was a busy week last week preparing for our trip so I only managed to get in 1 yoga session and 1 run. Other than tons of walking, this week isn't looking any better.

What I am excited for? One guess??? Yup, finding out the gender next week!! Yippee!!!

Highlights This Week? Being on vacation, visiting new places, wearing comfy clothes, sleeping in, catching up with good friends and some other great news that I have to wait a bit to share!!

Memorable Pregnancy Moments? Feeling the little nudges more frequently (like right now as I type this post!)

Baby Projects? Still working on cleaning out my office. Once we get back from vacation (and find out the sex), the room renovation will be in full force.

Baby Purchases? None, but I stopped in a little baby shop while in Victoria that sold cloth diapers. The owner was very helpful and they seem a lot less daunting so I am actually considering cloth diapering now! Good thing laundry is one of my favourite chores!

Wish list? My hubby as he is hiking the West Coast Trail right now and I miss him!

Pregzilla Moments? I think I temporarily lost my mind when I agreed to camp for one night at the beginning of our trip! For all those that know me, camping is not my thing!

A Year Ago Today...

I ran my very first half marathon!!!

This last year has just flown by!! I have never been so happy and proud of myself for completing something! I have completed 4 half marathons now which I never expected to do when I was training for my first one.

As someone who HATED running in high school and hated it more when I tried it a few times as an adult, I am amazed that I made the decision to do a half marathon, never mind complete four in 7 months! It's just proof that if you put your mind to it, you can do anything!

I'm Outta Here...

Packed and ready to hit the road!!

Vancouver Island, here we come! It will be my first visit to the Island ever. I am also going to visit a good friend (hi Jenn!!) while in Victoria which I am the most excited about!!! Can't wait to see her- it has been way too long!

We will spend a few days in Victoria, and the remainder driving around from Nanaimo to Bamfield and back down to Victoria. Are there any must-see places or things to do while we are there?

I am hoping to do lots of walking, light hikes and a couple runs while I am away. I will not gain lots of weight from eating excessive junk food on this trip!!!

Good luck to Deb on her 1st Oly tri tomorrow and all my other friends that are racing in the next two weeks!!

~Three Things Thursday~

1. Road trips= weight gain for me. During my last road trip, I gained at least 5 pounds because I was eating out for every meal (those B&B breakfasts were amazing but it was way more food than I needed!), snacking along the way and not working out as much as I do regularly. Part of the problem is that I get nauseous in the car (pregnant or not) and the best way to make that go away is to eat. Great….

I decided that this road trip is going to be different. I did buy a few treats ahead of time to prevent raiding the gas stations along the way, but most importantly I took the time to buy healthy snacks for us to eat- carrots, apples, grapes, cheese strings, salami and crackers for lunches, and trail mix. The goal is to not gain tons of weight, although I do know a few pounds are to be expected with my growing belly.

Anything else anyone can suggest would be a good, healthy road trip snack/lunch?

2. Pregnancy brain is not a lie. I used to think that pregnant women used it as an excuse to be lazy (ok kidding…) but it actually exists. I have a pretty good memory but if I don’t write something down, I will forget midway what I am doing…. Crap, where was I going with this????

3. No workout last night. I had a splitting headache (which is odd for me) after work and had to cancel my dinner plans. I think the heat is getting to me. I don’t foresee a workout tonight either as I will be finishing all my packing for our trip!! I did get a head start on it this weekend so maybe it will only take me two more hours instead of four.

16 Weeks:Holy Guacamole!!

How big is Baby N? Almost 5 inches long and 3.5oz. S/he can hear my voice now (better watch my language!) and is growing hair, lashes and eyebrows!

Hence the guacamole...

Weight gain? Up a couple pounds.

Maternity Clothing? Leigh and I went shopping on the weekend. While browsing one store that carries a maternity line, but isn't exclusively maternity, the sales lady came up to me and said "You know this is the maternity section right?" Um- yah thanks! I am in need of maternity clothes! In a maternity only store, we found the perfect sequin black short skirt which would be great for bar hopping... while pregnant!! WTF??!?! All the shirts I did end up buying came from non-maternity stores! Thank goodness long shirts are "in" right now!

Cravings? Nothing good...

Symptoms? Nausea, puking, fatigue, dry skin... all the fun preggo things! Some days it's bad, other days I barely feel pregnant.

Sleep? More please! For some reason 11 hours a night isn't enough...

Workouts? Thanks to the above preggo symptoms, my workouts suffered last week. I only managed to get in 2 runs,  and 1 yoga session.

What I am excited for? As always- end of the month when we find out the baby's gender!! Which also means we get to see the baby on the ultrasound again!! S/he better cooperate and not be too acrobatic!

What I miss? Racing.

Memorable Pregnancy Moments? Feeling the baby move ever so slightly. Right now it is just twinges and turns but soon it will be way more noticeable!!

Baby Purchases? UPPAbaby Stroller. After much deliberation, we decided on silver.
This is not a jogging stroller!

16 Weeks in the evening after a big meal
16 Weeks 1 day
What the belly normally looks like!
When I took the picture on Sunday I knew that my belly isn't normally that big (yet) so I figured it was probably due to the delicious dinner and 2 cupcakes I had a few hours prior. Compared to the picture the next day, the belly is definitely smaller!!

Run Sans Garmin

It just keeps getting hotter and hotter here! Unfortunately CoCo seems to be returning to her naughty ways and not keeping a charge for very long. Why did I procrastinate in having her looked at before my warranty was up?!?! She was fully charged on Saturday before I went for my short 3K run, and by Tuesday evening she was dead. Darn!! How could I have forgotten to charge her?

It was my first Garmin-less run since I got her last July. At this point I don’t really care about pace but it’s nice to see what my heart rate is at, especially when it is super hot out. I also like to know how far I have gone, and what my time was. For my pretty graph, you know…

It wasn't a catastrophe worth ditching the run for so I headed out anyway with a naked wrist. After our clinic guest speaker (on Race Preparation) we headed out for a run. The group had 6K planned, but I knew that would be a bit much for me in the heat.

Lucky for me, Lynn is racing this weekend so she was more than willing to run at a snail’s pace with me! She had her Garmin so it wasn’t truly a Garmin-free run!! We walked a couple times when I needed a drink and just to cool down. We ended up doing just over 4K. Overall it was an enjoyable run and I am glad I had great company to keep me going!! I love my running group!

Now if I could just figure out what is wrong with Coco…

~What I did this Long Weekend~

How is the weekend over already? At least I only have four more days until vacation!

Friday I had a hair appointment after work which is always relaxing. I also saw that the baby stroller we have been eyeing was on sale so we rearranged our evening to make a trip to the baby store to buy it. After much deliberation, I decided on a silver colour (seriously I am not good with too many options!) and we ordered it. Should be here in about 6 weeks!!! Our first major baby purchase= done!!

After power shopping, we went out for dinner. Something that we do pretty regularly without thinking will become a big deal in a few months...

Saturday I went for a 3K run. We have been experiencing some gorgeous late summer weather and by 11am when I headed out (did you really think I would get out of bed early?) it was pretty warm. I had a tough time with the heat and cut the run a bit short as I could feel a headache coming on. Should have brought my fancy handheld with me…

Leigh graciously offered to go shopping with me in the afternoon. We had quite the adventure looking for decent maternity clothes and all the items I ended up buying are non-maternity!! After the shopping excursion, hubby and I went to a BBQ at some friends’ house.

Sunday rolled along and I decided (ahead of time) that I wasn’t going to meet up with the group for their long run. They were doing 18K and I didn’t want to sit around for a 1.5 hours after my short run waiting for them (bad supporter I am!). Later I found out that our instructor rode her bike along side the runners which would have been an excellent idea. I am totally kicking myself now for not checking with her beforehand as that would have been lots of fun!

Instead I spent the day power cleaning and skipped my run as the day got hotter and hotter. I did a 45 minute Ripped workout instead in the coolness of my basement.

We went over to my auntie’s house for a BBQ that night. It was good to catch up with them as we haven’t seen them since my cousin’s wedding. There was lots of belly rubbing going on… (just my belly!).

Thank goodness Monday was a holiday as I had lots of things to do. I started packing for our trip to Vancouver Island and we went over to my parents for a visit. I even managed to squeeze in a prenatal yoga workout in the evening before bed.

Have I mentioned only 4 more days till vacation??? :)

Monthly Stats: August 2011

Recap of August and my progress towards my GOALS for 2011

Total # runs- 8- up from last month!
Total # kms- 49.5K
Total # kms 2011- 623.2K

Best run- despite the rain, the 5.5K run where I didn't stop for walk breaks!
Worst run- Only bad because it was more of a walk, but the company was great!
Total # races- 0
Total # non-run workouts- 8- I thought there were more?
Total # books read this month- 3- Matter of the Heart, Sing You Home, Still Alice. Highly recommend them all- all chit lit.
Eating Habits- 3.25/5. Have had a few major carb cravings and probably had a couple more ice creams that needed but overall I can't complain. I am trying to not "eat for two" because really you only need a couple extra hundred calories, and not the kind found in chips, chocolate bars and sundaes.

August Reflections

Well, the news is officially out so I feel a huge weight is lifted off my shoulders. I can finally be open about the changes in my training program and not hide the fact that I was slacking big time. I am glad that the first trimester and most of the sickness and fatigue that it brings is over (hope I didn't just jinx myself).

I am going to have to revise my goals for the year as I don't thing some of them are realistic due to my "condition" (seriously, I laugh everytime I type that out!) but I still think that goals are important. Stay tuned for a post on my changing goals.

** Side note- I am sad that August is over which means that cold, nasty weather is around the corner. Oh right, it's sorta arrived already.

~Three Things Thursday~

1. Yesterday I had an amazing prenatal massage. Really the only major difference at this point is that I laid on my side instead of my stomach and I got to hug a giant body pillow! It's so nice to be pampered!

2. Fall is upon us. I would personally like to thank all the people who wished fall would come so they can wear sweaters and boots (sarcasm). Hope you enjoy the drowned rat look I have been sporting. I really need to invest in some rubber boots as I would definitely get a lot of wear out of them and I would be less wet arriving at work.

If I only looked this cute in the rain...

3. I am back on the pathways!! After close to 10 days off (not really intentionally), I went for my first run last night, in the rain. We did a 5.5K loop and I didn’t stop once for a walk break!! Normally this wouldn’t be a big feat but with the super hot weather we had been having, I was taking some walk breaks even during my short runs to cool down and keep my HR in check. Not last night! I still wasn’t super speedy, but I am happy with my run. I had some great company- the half marathon group did speed training in the day before so they were hurtin’.

My legs (quads & ITB) hurt a bit after, and I had to roll my legs after as I had some tightness around my knees. I have never had this before (except maybe at the very end of a HM) so I want to make sure I take care of it ASAP. Don’t need any ITB issues thankyouverymuch!!

The other good news is that my Garmin doesn’t seem to have any ill-effects from Monday night’s psycho-ness! Huge sigh of relief!
