~Three Things Thursday~

1. It’s my Friday, it’s my Friday, it’s my Friday!! Happy Canada Day Long weekend to all the Canadians and Happy 4th of July to all the Americans! I am so excited that for once this holiday will actually be a long weekend for me!

2. Looks like I will be able to wear my new sundresses this weekend!!! It’s gonna be a sunny, warm one!!! So excited!! It is usually so cold in my office (all year round) that even when it is nice outside I have to wear pants and a sweater.

3. Last night’s run- It was quite warm out yesterday, about 27C. Thankfully there was a nice wind to keep us cool during our short 4K run. CoCo seemed to hold a charge better so I am going to try to do a few things this weekend in hopes that I don’t have to send her away for warranty.
Question- if I hard reset, will it delete all my info on Garmin Connect too, or just what’s stored on the watch? I don’t care about what’s on the watch because I always download it to the site but if it wipes out the info stored on the site too I might cry. I hate technology sometimes!

Annnnd my abs still burn from Tuesday's workout!!

Strength Training Burns!

Like we do during every clinic training cycle, we have a talk on Cross Training. What better way to talk about cross training than do it! We went to Fitness Fix for a 1 hour strength training core workout. My abs are so sore now! This class really does make me realize how weak my core is.

A few people opted to go for a run afterwards but I decided that I will just switch my Tuesday run to Thursday. It’s supposed to rain that day after all.

Thanks for the comments on my Garmin. I will try to reset and if it isn’t fixed by this weekend I am going through warranty. I sure hope nothing major is wrong!

Is it Thursday yet???

CoCo is sick!

CoCo, my trusty Garmin 405 appears to be sick. I noticed in the last couple of months that she isn't holding a charge as long as she was when I first got her (almost a year ago). When I first got her, I could probably d0 3-4 hours worth of workouts before she died. Then it went down to about 2 workouts (and we are talking about an hour each, not 5 hours each!), but the last couple of days after 1 hour the battery is dying.

Something is wrong!

Why do we become so dependent on these devices and then they decide to crap out and die? Any suggestions on what I should do? Someone mentioned doing a factory reset... any experience doing something like this? I have about 2 weeks until the my one year anniversary so I need to figure it out ASAP or else I am taking her in for warranty.

Last night I did a 25 minute Ripped strength training workout. I "almost" skipped out on it but after my 3 hour nap, I certainly couldn't use the excuse that I was tired, even if it was late! I have completely messed up my sleep schedule by taking naps. Both Sunday and Monday I took a 3+ hour nap in the afternoon so I am wired at bed time. It's such a vicious circle because now I am exhausted again.

Just need to get through the day...

~What I did this Weekend~

The weekends just seem to zoom right by! I can't believe another one has come and gone.

On Friday hubby and I went out to a local pub and enjoyed some bevies and dinner. Since it was such a nice night out (and you know from all my complaining that nice nights are hard to come by around here!) I to skip an indoor strength training or yoga workout and went for a 45 minute walk instead. It was the perfect evening for a stroll around the neighborhood.
Saturday we were up fairly early for a bike ride towards Bragg Creek with our friend K. We planned to go all the way to Bragg Creek (65K round trip), but decided to turn around about 16K in. It was super windy and K had already done a tough Cross fit workout that morning.
As soon as we turned around the wind was at our backs and we were flying! What took 51 minutes there, took 30 minutes on the way back!!  We were going up tough hills like they were nothing.

Total of 33K in 1:22

Beginning of the ride

Crossing the road

After the bike ride, my sis and I went to watch Bridesmaids. Funniest movie ever!! I could not stop laughing!! Even the guys would have like it!! I keep remembering parts of the movie and laughing to myself!! Have you seen it? What did you think?

Sunday morning brought our 9K long run and... rain. I woke up at about 4am to go to the bathroom and could hear the rain coming down. Greaaat!! It had stopped by the time we began the run, but then it started back up about 4K in. We were soaked by the finish! We did a route that I haven't done for almost a year so it was a nice change of scenery. There were 3 big hills but we managed to power through them. It was a great run in spite of the weather.

The Group ventured over to Tim Horton's for some food and to warm up. Good thing I had my jacket in the car or else I really would have frozen.
We spent the afternoon at some friends' condo painting. Man, that is a workout- it should definitely count as cross training! My arms, legs, butt and back are sore from going up and down! I think my house might stay builder beige forever!!

After all that hard work, I had to take a nap! Three hours later I dragged myself out of bed to finish the laundry and eat some dinner. For the first time we had some veggies from our garden in the salad- spinach, radishes and thyme. I can't wait until the rest of the veggies are ready!

After dinner hubby made some brownies which we enjoyed on the deck. Loving the new patio furniture way more than I expected!!

Little escape artist!!

At least this week is short! Yay for Canada Day long weekend!!!!

Hope you had a great weekend!

Enjoying the Sun & my Hubby's Hard Work!

After work yesterday I took full advantage of the sunshine and sat out on the deck on the new sofa set. A girl's gotta work on her tan, especially when she has a pretty s#xy bike shorts tan line!! Nothing like enjoying the sun while reading a good book and having a cool drink!

It's so bright!!

Tan those legs!!
All that sunshine made me a tad sleepy so I went inside and took a short nap while waiting for hubby to come home from work. Yawn!!!

We watched a bunch of HGTV- love Decked Out!! They create some pretty awesome outdoor spaces! I finally peeled myself off the couch around 8:30pm to get my minimum 20 minute workout in for the day. I did 25 minutes of the Get Ripped DVD. You know, if you fast forward through all the commentary, I bet the entire workout is only 40 minutes long! It's good when you are first starting out, but I don't need to hear the same thing over and over again about stretching and how strong I am and making time for myself. Blah, blah, blah!!

So looking forward to the weekend! We are going to be really busy but it should be fun. I just hope the sun stays out so I can keep enjoying all my hubby's hard work in the backyard! I guess if it is cool I can always turn on the new patio heater!

Have a good weekend!

~Three Things Thursday~

1. Last night’s run- it was another warm one! I brought my water belt this time and definitely made use of it at a couple lights. We were scheduled for 4K but our instructor felt bad for over-running us on Tuesday so we did a loop that is just under 4K.

2. I am trying to find new running shorts that won’t break the bank. I usually wear tighter shorts (look like bike shorts) as I hate when they ride up/chafe but I am hoping to find a looser pair that doesn’t ride up and/chafe. I love my running capris but they are too warm for 20+C runs (not complaining!) I am leaning towards the Turbo Run short...  What are your favourite running shorts?

3. I love summer, I really do, but I have such a hard time going to bed when it is still light out. If I wait until it is dark, it is way too late (past 11pm) and then I am exhausted the next day (like now). It sucks because I want to take advantage of all the sunlight and the nice weather, but I can’t if I a dead tired. Wish I was a bear that hibernated all winter…

Oh and I mean I have a hard time making myself go to bed... I can sleep when it is still light out, which is why I am a great napper!! :)

It's Warm... Bring Water!

Last night was our clinic night. We had a guest speaker talk about balance in our lives- basically to focus on what you are doing instead of trying to balance a bunch of things at once. Prioritize and set aside time for the things that are important and else you won’t be able to do the things you need/want to do.

The weather has finally gotten the memo that it is officially summer, and it was warm last night. Warm for us is about 25C/77F. Definitely not a scorcher especially compared to the temperatures that a lot of our Eastern and southern friends have been dealing with for the last couple of months, but still warm for someone used to running in about 10-12C.

The schedule called for a 3K run. Usually I don’t carry water if my run is fewer than 5K. I just don’t like the bulkiness for the short distance and I find that I don’t really need the water. Well that all changes when it is warm out! Our instructor brings water regardless of the weather and/or distance. She has always harped on us to bring water and like I said, if it is farther than 5K I do.

I thought I would be fine today but our instructor decided to change the schedule and have us run 4K. That’s fine- 1 more K won’t derail me. Well, we did a 4.75K route!! I knew I would be fine, but was definitely thirsty. I ran with Shannon and she always brings her water belt as she is afraid of our instructor’s wrath!! She was kind enough to share a bottle with me at one point.

So note to self- it is now summer and it’s time to bring that water belt all.the.time. I also need to start remembering to put on sunscreen and bug spray. Last thing I want is ugly tan lines and bug bites.

I thought that we were dragging our feet as it felt so slow but I was pleasantly surprised to see we maintained a 6:34 pace. Not bad considering I thought it was closer to 7:00!!

I was a sweaty mess after- GROSS! This is one thing I don’t like about the warmer weather… but let me make this clear- I AM NOT COMPLAINING!!!!

So what's your threshold for bringing water on a run?

Yoga Monday

I went to another yoga class after work yesterday, with yet another new instructor. Kate was very different from the instructor on Friday- she was very soft spoken and did a great job of helping us think about nothing but yoga for the full hour.

I think it’s pretty interesting how a flow foundation class can be so completely different from instructor to instructor. Yesterday we did about 2 sun salutations in the entire class, whereas on Friday we did lots of them. I enjoy them, but mixing it up once and awhile is refreshing too. The class was so good I feel asleep twice!! I just hope that I didn’t snore!

When I left the studio, it was… raining. Surprise, surprise! It was a sun shower though so I will complain a little less than normal about it! Good thing we bought covers for our new patio furniture or else it would have been soaked before we even tried it out!

We did manage to sit outside for a bit, although our quiet evening was interrupted by the neighbors’ yappy dogs!!

I am half way done my 40 Day Challenge!!! It actually hasn’t been too hard trying to fit workouts in (minus the one night spent at Urgent Care). It helps that I try not to overbook myself too much on weeknights anyway.

I don’t miss my rest day(s) at all- it’s good that some of my workouts aren’t super intensive or else I would probably the break.

~What I did this Weekend~

Friday after work I headed to a yoga class. There was a new instructor, a guy and we did more of an Ashtanga practice which was a nice change. He reminded me of a surfer and occasionally joked around with us. I really enjoyed the class and look forward to more with him.

Since the sun finally decided to grace us with her presence for more than 2 seconds, I did some gardening (aka weeding) when I got home. Should have put some bug spray on though as the mosquitoes were having a hay day! Hubby and I spent the rest of the night relaxing together.

Saturday we did the usual household chores, which was a good plan since it poured.all.day.long. Instead of a nice bike ride outside, I did a short 45 minute spin in the basement. Lame but what can you do!

We figured we would take advantage of the crap weather and do some patio furniture shopping (you know, in case it ever gets nice enough to enjoy the backyard?) After much deliberation, we decided on a sofa set rather than a patio table and chairs.

Waikiki Sofa Set
We have been browsing for awhile and hubby stumbled across this nice set at Rona. We checked it out and I fell in love! Being the indecisive person that I am, I had to look at a few more stores to make 100% that this was the best one, for the best price. So we wasted another hour…

We then braved Costco on a Saturday to do our once-every-three months stock up. Surprisingly we didn’t do too much damage. I did find a recipe book for Quinoa which I am excited to use!!

We spent the rest of the night catching up on So You Think You Can Dance! LOVE this show!! It makes me want to be a dancer every season!!

Sunday we woke up to sun which was a relief. Didn’t want to do even a short LSD in a torrential downpour! We met up with our running group and did 7K. We followed a different route which was a nice change, even if it was a tad hilly!!

We rushed home so we could get everything ready for hubby’s family to come over for Father’s Day Brunch. He made delicious eggs benedict, and fruit salad. My brother-in-law brought homemade cinnamon buns. We had a great time visiting with everyone!

After they left, we decided to go to Rona to purchase the patio sofa set. We also ordered a patio heater lamp so that we can enjoy the deck on cooler nights.
Ours will not have a pool behind it!
The box ended up being a little too big for hubby’s SUV so he had to make a couple trips to get all the pieces home. When he did the first drop off, I stayed back in the parking lot with the massive box with the other half of our furniture! Thankfully it didn’t take him too long to come back and pick me up!

My parents came over for Father’s Day Dinner. It was nice to see them. Hubby showed off all his hard work in the backyard and practiced his BBQ skills by making a Beer Can Chicken. So good!!

It was a great weekend!! I loved spending time with all the family and am happy the sun came out for a little bit (although still not warm enough to wear a dress!)!!!

I can see it... maybe... sorta?

The sun that is… it’s trying to hard so peak out of the clouds. It would be nice for it to come all the way out so I can wear these without fra-eezing!!

Bliss Dress- Lululemon

K it's not this short on me!
Forever 21 (don't judge!)
Last night we had dinner plans with a friend to celebrate her birthday so I needed to do a workout beforehand that wouldn’t leave me sweating like crazy as I really didn’t want to shower and get ready again. I did the Jillian Michael’s Yoga Meltdown and it did the trick. Good workout, not a lot of sweat!

Turns out I am going to have to make a stop at the bookstore as I bought the 3rd book in the Hunger Games series instead of the 2nd book!! I couldn’t figure out why the 1st few pages didn’t make any sense what so ever!! Blonde much?

Looking forward to a relaxing weekend and celebrating Father’s Day with the Dads.

~Three Things Thursday~

1. We are planning our road trip to B.C. next month!! Looking forward to some sun, lying on the beach, running in new places, wine tours and just relaxing!! Only 19 more work days!!

2. Should have worn yoga pants to work today. It is raining like crazy here and I don’t know why I even bothered getting ready this morning. My curled hair is now straight in the front, and my grey pants are wet all around the hem. From now on when it is raining/snowing/extremely windy I am just going to wear my yoga pants to the office and do my hair when I get here.

3. Last night’s run was on the treadmill. We were stuck in traffic after work so we wouldn’t have made the group run. I wasn’t going to run by myself in the rain so instead I did 3K on the treadmill while catching up on One Tree Hill. I guess it is too much to ask for 2 nice days in a row around here.

Rain, rain, go away, come back another...year!

Back on Track!

Thanks for the sympathies for hubby- it’s more than he is getting from me!! Hahaha!

Some of you have pretty crazy stitches stories- fiancé’s trying to cut off his finger before the wedding, peeling potatoes, and lemonade cans!! Scary stuff!! Personally I just prefer to get stitches in my face- chin and lip. Although I “should” have had stitches below my knee but that’s a long story!!

The weather forecast doesn’t look too favourable here for the next week. Yesterday we were supposed to have rain all day but luckily were spared until the middle of the night. I was able to get in a great clinic run. With the better weather a few more people are showing up. We did just under 4K.

I ran with Cathy who isn’t actually part of our clinic but comes out for our runs anyway. She was telling me about a cut that she got while riding her bike last year on her calf. She fell and the derailleur chewed up her calf. She didn’t get stitches (long story) and while it healed, it left a big scar.

I think I might just lock myself in the closet now. It isn’t safe to do anything!! Kidding…

Change of Plans

Sometimes the best laid plans just don’t work. Things aren’t always in your power and you just have to move on. That is the case with my planned at-home yoga workout yesterday.

I came home around 7pm after visiting my dad and eat some leftovers. I watched some trash TV while I folded laundry (that’s the only way I can justify watching it!) and was going to do my workout around 8:15pm once I had digested my dinner.

Hubby was out working in the yard when he burst in and said he cut himself with a utility knife and needed stitches!! We jumped in the car, not even really knowing where to go at 8pm at night. Every time I needed stitches when I was younger I went to the walk-in clinic but they all seemed to be closed when we called.

We called Health Link and they suggested we go to the Urgent Care centre which is downtown. Hubby was feeling pretty nauseous, dizzy, sweaty and green- he was definitely in shock.

I dropped him off at the doors before looking for parking. In only a couple minutes they had him in triage to access him. His blood pressure was low and his pupils were dilated so they moved him right into admitting so he could lie down.

I had to wait to register him which didn’t take long at all. When I went back to see him about 15 minutes later, he looked way better. The cut ended up being about an inch long and ½ an inch deep. It was on the side of his knee and vertical so it should heal up no problem.

Hubby at Urgent Care

Gashed knee
Even though he was admitted right away, he had to wait awhile for the doctor to come available to stitch up his knee.

So… Three hours later we were out of there. We didn’t get home until almost midnight and there was no way I was doing 20 minutes of exercise when I had to get up in 5 hours.

It was a fitful sleep as the freezing started to come out halfway through the night so hubby was in some pain. Morning came way too quickly! I might need to nap before my run tonight…

Moral of the story- don’t cut anything towards yourself…

Have you ever had stitches before??

BLOGGER!?!?!?!?!

Seriously having major problems with this stupid program!!! It keeps rearranging my post- fonts are all effed up, deleting paragraphs, etc.

I might have to completely re-start my weekend recap all over again (which I already did once before).

Jerkface! :P

~What I did this Weekend~

Friday, after work, hubby and I hit the road to go to my cousin’s out-of-town wedding. made it to the hotel  by 7:00pm. We settled in and decided to go to the hotel pool with my sis and her family. My workout for the day was an hour of splashing around in the pool, with some breaststroke before it got too busy with kids flying down the slide. We had lots of fun!!

Swimming at the hotel pool

This was also the last official day of my Sugar Free Challenge. Since we ate at a restaurant there is the possibility that there was some sugar in my Quesadilla or the salad dressing. Hubby asked for sugar free dressing when he ordered for me (I was in the bathroom- he doesn't always order for me!) but it was a vinaigrette so there was probably a gram or two of sugar. Nothing major though.

Saturday we went down to the lobby for a light continental breakfast before embarking on an adventure run around our hotel. It was warm out and it was only 9:00am! We asked the concierge for directions to a pathway and found there was one close by. Our plan was to run around 4K or 30 minutes. Once we got on the pathway there were lots of trees and grassy areas. I enjoy running in new places- it keeps things fresh  and exciting.

Map in hand- ready for an adventurous run

Hubby

Running in a field

After our run we got ready for the Groom's Lunch at a nearby golf course. Being the over-prepared person that I am, we arrived an hour before it started. Opps- I thought the invitation said 11:30am, not 12:30pm!! We decided to kill time and practice our putting.

Not quite dressed for golfing...

Tiger Woods?? Minus the cheating part

It was really nice to visit in a more casual setting before the wedding, but you could tell there were some nerves in the air (not the Groom's!) Our food took longer than expected so we were rushed to return to our hotel and get ready.

We made it to the church in the nick of time... just as the bride was pulling up!

Beautiful bride and her father

Happy Couple

It was an amazing ceremony with a few tears, lots of organ music and plenty of laughter. This may be one of the best wedding ceremonies I have been to.

Hubby and I

The reception was a blast!! Every little detail was thought of and everyone had an awesome time! The food was delicious, the candy buffet was adorable and the live swing band was fabulous!!! We had lots of fun tearing up the dance floor.

Best Red Velvet Cake ever!!! So worth the wait!

Finally Sunday rolled around. We went back to the golf course for brunch before meeting up with hubby's cousin who lives in the same city for coffee. It was nice to catch up with L however briefly before we made the trek back home.

Once we got home we had to do all the usual weekend stuff, as well as fit in our 7K LSD. After dinner we went for a run and the weather was ideal. The sun was still out and there was a slight breeze. I love runs like this!!

It was the perfect weekend!! I would be lying if I said I wasn't sad that it is over!

** as per usual, Blogger is misbehaving. I can't get the fonts and format to work properly. I give up...

~Happy Day!~

... and not just because it is Friday! So many things to be thankful for today- the sun is OUT, wedding celebrations, visiting with family, relaxing this weekend, wonderful husband, and lots of motivation to stick with my Challenges.

Even though today is technically the last day of the Sugar Free Challenge, I am going to keep it up for the most part. I will allow myself some treats (hello wedding cake!) but I am addicted to this great feeling that I am sure is from not eating sugar. Combined with working out for at least 20 minutes every day, I feel amazing! My energy levels are high, I haven’t been getting the afternoon “crashes” that I normally get (as long as I eat enough calories in the day) and no more post-meal bloat.

Last night was super busy getting ready to head out of town this weekend so I was only able to fit in a 25 minutes yoga workout. Now that I have done Jillian Michaels’ Yoga Meltdown twice I am really starting to like it. I will admit that she annoys me a bit (drill sergeant much?) but it’s a good workout and that’s the important thing.

Yesterday's Sugar Free Meals
Breakfast- Plain yogurt with sugar free vanilla and banana
Snack- Orange
Lunch- Cauliflower Mac n’ cheese, salad, Ukrainian sausage (leftovers)
Snack- Apple
Dinner- Chicken and vegetable Tikka Masala and coconut rice (love!)
Snack- 6 crackers

Chicken Tikka Masala

I need to think of some other snacks because I am probably eating more fruit than I should be. I am going to stalk some blogs of the other Sugar Free Challenge participants and see what I can find.

I spent most of the evening packing (I only have one suitcase, 2 bags and a garment bag for a weekend trip). I like to be prepared and my workout gear takes up a lot of space! The workout challenge isn’t over for another 30 days!!

Have a good weekend!

~Three Things Thursday~

1. So excited for this weekend!! My cousin is getting married so we get to dress up super fancy and party all night long. Saturday is also the end of the Sugar Free Challenge so I may indulge a bit. Nothing too crazy as I really enjoy how I am feeling right now, but it would be nice to have a piece of cake!!

2. Dinner last night- awhile back I had ripped out a recipe from Runner’s World for Creamy Cauliflower Mac. As a white cheddar KD lover, I thought this might be a good, healthier choice to try. Hubby has been extremely supportive of my Sugar Free Challenge- hunting down ingredients that doesn’t contain sugar, making sure there aren’t any treats in the house and just cooking healthy food all together.

He prepped this dish before our run and just had to bake it for about 20 minutes after our run. We also had a delicious salad with homemade dressing (rosemary from the garden!) and some spicy Ukrainian sausage. Hubby said he felt the mac and cheese was a little bland but I think with the rest of the dinner it went well.

So yummy!! Guess what I am having for lunch?

3. Last night’s run- the dark clouds have been threatening us for a couple days now but the rain has stayed away (so far). Last night was the perfect weather for a run- not too hot, too sunny, and light wind. We were scheduled to do 3K, and our instructor told us she expected us all to be back in less than 21 minutes! I figured it shouldn’t be too hard as I did 3K last week (in the rain) in less than 18 minutes.

I tried to keep up with Rose but she took off around 300m into the run and left me in the dust! Instead I ran most of it with Howard who is suffering from some calf problems. He would run with me and then walk to stretch it out. Then he would catch up before he had to walk it out again. He is an excellent pacer!

In the last 150m or so, Howard pulled ahead. I could hear Rose cheering us on and telling me to pass Howard so I switched to the next gear and gave it my all for the last 100m. I passed him and was so close to puking when I finished. This is probably the closest I have ever come to puking after a run.

1K- 6:01
2K- 5:49
3K- 6:00
0.41K- 5:04

Total Distance- 3.41K
Total Time- 19:56
Average Pace- 5:50

It was hard but it felt so good to push to the point of puke. I think I need to do all my 3-5K runs like this. I need to find a 5K race to train towards…

Tuesday- Challenge Success!

I have been bringing whole veggies to work and cutting them up as I need them. This works perfectly because sometimes I don't have time to put together lunch at home, but it's easier to cut up the food in the fridge at work than go hunt down sugar free, healthy food.

Breakfast- plain yogurt with sugar free vanilla, thanks to my lovely hubby for finding this, along with some strawberries. So delicious!!

Snack- Orange

Lunch- Steak & Poutine- I blame Kristen! I read her post and then I started craving it. It was well worth the 30 minute round trip walk to the closest poutine vendor!

Snack- chopped veggies & cheese stick

After work I went for a quick 4K run at the park by my office. It was forecasted to rain but it never did! Yippee! It sure felt like rain- muggy which is not common for dry Calgary. I kept a good pace, except my auto pause didn’t work at a couple lights.

I planned to run immediately after work** because my friend and I were going to the spa after. Our sessions were 3 hours long so I knew I wouldn’t get a workout in afterwards. Good call as I wasn’t home until 9pm!

Late night supper- assorted baked appetizers- sugar free. Not the best dinner but I wanted something quick-ish and it seemed healthier than frozen pizza.

While I waited for my dinner, I made some quinoa for lunch. It was my first time making it and it was so easy! I will be eating lots of it from now on. I actually didn’t like it when I first tried it but with the right amount of veggies/sauce it is soooo good!

I am really enjoying both these Challenges. I don't miss sugar, I like that I am eating healthier, I have lost a couple pounds, and it feels nice to sweat every day!

** I am seriously so envious of those people that can workout at lunch (or whenever) and still look presentable to do something after the workout without completely getting ready all over again. I was one sweaty mess after my 4K run and it was only 15C outside! My face was red and dripping, my hair was a big matted mess under my hat and I really could have used a shower!

~Bragg Creek Ride~

I got my camera back so here is the recap of our bike ride on Sunday-

Sunday morning was a bit of a gong show. We didn’t have any groceries and there was no way I was going on a 4 hour bike ride without breakfast or fuel for the ride. Since I am going Sugar- Free, I couldn’t eat the yogurt cups at home with sugar in them, nor my regular GU Chomps that I use for fuel on the go.

We stopped at Booster Juice by our house but apparently people in the ‘burbs don’t need breakfast until after 10am. Thankfully Subway was open and they serve breakfast now (who knew!) so we dashed in there for a bacon, cheese, egg flat bread wrap. It was pretty good!! I will definitely go there again for some fast breakfast. Unfortunately there was a few grams of sugar in the flat bread so not completely sugar-free but it was better than nothing! We also stopped at the grocery store for apples and carrots to bring along for the ride.

We met our friends at the Signal Hill shopping centre to park our cars. The forecast was super nice-  23C and sunshine but it was just a little chilly at 10:00am so I put on my sleeves before starting out. Unfortunately I didn’t put sunscreen on my arms so you know what that means!! The sleeves only stayed on for about 20 minutes so for over 3 hours my arms were exposed to the sun without protection.

Hubby, H & S

Hubby, me and S

The ride on the highway started out pretty interesting as the gravel hadn’t been cleared from the shoulder of the road yet. It was pretty windy out so it was tough navigating the thin line between the gravel and the rumble strips. Thankfully that didn’t last long and the gravel was cleared for most of the ride.

All my running and my occasional winter spins have made me a lot stronger than I originally thought. Usually this route is pretty tough but I powered up those hills relatively easily. Don’t get me wrong- I am not in tip-top cycling shape but it was a lot easier than I remembered.

One of our friends that we rode with hasn’t been on her bike since last year so she took her time. It definitely didn’t help that the wind was making it even more difficult. We didn’t push quite as hard and took a few breaks which added some time to our overall trip.

The shoulders are so wide on this road!

The scary part is always the traffic circle onto Highway 22. For the most part the drivers are pretty considerate- although there was one SUV full of people that screamed at every cyclist they passed. Jerks!

Once in Bragg Creek we stopped at Cinnamon Spoon for a break. It was pretty busy with other cyclists. While we were sitting in the café eating our snack (fruit smoothie and my apples and carrots) two guys with Crave Cupcakes race kits (jerseys and shorts) come in. Do you believe me now when I say Crave Cupcakes is stalking me?

Hubby
Me and BlueBelle

Unfortunately my Garmin died just after we left the café so I don’t have all the stats. I do know that it is about 65K round trip and it took us 4 hours but that includes a long break at the café (45 minutes?) and several rests along the way.

The mosquitoes still managed to find me on my bike! They were biting me while I rode and I did use bug spray! At least they are mostly on my hips and butt so no one can see them. Let's just say that it isn't a good idea to try to swat bugs while cycling on a windy day!

Resting at the top of one of the hills
This is such a great ride and I can't wait to do it again this summer! Next time I will wear sunscreen on my arms!

Day 6 of Sugar Free and 40 Day Workout Challenge

Yesterday was a good day for not eating sugar but I didn’t eat nearly enough food and I felt like crap for a good part of the day because I was low on calories.

Breakfast- plain yogurt with cinnamon- only ate half as it was so gross. Didn’t have any fruit to mask the taste of the sour Astro yogurt.
Lunch- steak, raw veggies and cheese stick- filling, delicious and sugar free!
Snack- 2 small oranges, piece of gum

I had my pedicure with Leigh after work (which was lots of fun!) so I didn’t get a chance to eat dinner until 8:00pm.

Dinner- two small slices of toast with organic natural peanut butter. So good and surprisingly filling!
Snack- 5 crackers- neither good nor bad.

This just goes to show how important meal planning really is- I was so tempted to buy some fast food dinner last night as I was starving but I resisted. The sugar cravings are pretty much gone and I can’t believe how much better I feel overall.

Since I was pressed for time and unable to make it to yoga class yesterday, I picked up Jillian Michaels’ Yoga Meltdown DVD to do at home. I asked Alison if she had done it before as she has recommended Jillian Michaels' workouts before. She said that it is more like power yoga and she is definitely right!!

There are 2 levels that are about 30 minutes each. I was able to squeeze it in between my late-night dinner and The Bachelorette! It is different from the hot yoga that I have been doing lately- a lot faster, but it is a great workout and I can feel my upper body this morning. I actually quite enjoyed it. Thanks Alison!

I still think I will buy another yoga DVD that is slower and more meditative but I am pretty happy with this one.  Any recommendations? I would like the workouts to be around 20-40 minutes long.

Tonight I have to fit in a 4K run before another spa appointment after work. There is 100% chance of rain this afternoon so it’s going to be a wet one I am sure.

~What I did this Weekend~

This was the weekend of being overbooked which resulted in running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Not relaxing at all!

Friday
Saturday
  • Slept in and read my book for a bit before getting out of bed
  • Cleaned the house, and weeded the front yard
  • Ran 7K (check for the 40 Day Challenge)
  • Went to a birthday party where I tried to resist the wine but my friends insisted that it was natural sugar so it was okay. Pretty sure it wasn’t. At least I resisted the Crave Cupcakes again. (fail for the Sugar Free Challenge)
Sunday
  • We decided to not bike the Highwood Pass as we heard there was still quite a bit of snow up there (yes, it’s June). Instead we did the ride to Bragg Creek and back. Awesome ride- more details and pictures to follow when I pick up my camera from my friend's house. (check for the 40 Day Challenge)
  • Crave Cupcakes haunted me on this ride too- I am not kidding about them stalking me!!
  • I managed to get a sunburn on my arms and one leg on this ride.
Nice tan line from my cycling gloves
  • The ride took longer than we expected so we rushed back home to shower and head over to our friends’ house that had a baby last week so we could meet her. She is so incredibly precious. I just want to snuggle her all day!
  • We had dinner at our friends' house and they gave me some Colombian hot chocolate and some traditional Colombian sweets for dessert- it would have been rude to say no... (fail for Sugar Free Challenge)
  • We ended up being out really late since hubby had to stop at the office for a “few minutes” to do some work. Ended up being over an hour so we didn’t get home until 10:30pm. Yawn
We have no groceries in the house (no time to go to the store) so I am trying to choke down some plain yogurt and cinnamon sans fruit. So gross! My friend sent me some other ways to make it taste better but that involves a trip to the grocery store before I can try them.

Even though it was an insanely busy weekend, we did see a lot of friends which was fun and I did get all my workouts in. It was a lot harder to go Sugar Free this weekend as we had too many social commitments and for some reason people get mad when you say no to drinks?!?!? I know, I know I should have had more willpower. I didn’t even really want the drinks -I would have preferred a cupcake honestly.

The pro race photo’s from last week’s 10K are up. They are so bad and there is no way that I am spending $35 per picture for any of them. So disappointed! I think next time I am going to hire my own photographer- it will be cheaper and the pictures will be way better!

I am so looking forward to tonight’s pedicure with Leigh! It's our post-race treat!!

Minor Slip Up but it's FRIDAY!

I continued to resist all sugary temptation yesterday. I am so amazed at how much better I feel already! Normally I get quite bloated after I eat- didn't happen at all yesterday!

I did a bit of shopping after work, had to buy our new goddaughter a cute little outfit!, and I was definitely having a good body image day! Now if I could just figure out how to get rid of the ugly red mosquito bite marks on my legs... I was trying on dresses for my cousin's wedding and unless I wear a floor length dress, you can see the red spots. They aren't itchy anymore which is a bonus, but they are taking away from my runner's thighs/ calves!! Haha yah right!

I was starving by the time I finished at the mall but I knew if I picked up anything in the Food Court it would most likely have sugar in it. At home I found some cabbage rolls in the freezer (no sugar!) but unfortunately they took 1.5 hours to cook. Perfect opportunity to get my spin workout in while I waited! I had a piece of cheese to tide me over and did 45 minutes on the spin trainer.

This morning, after discussing with a few people, I decided to add vanilla extract to my plain yogurt for breakfast. I added about a teaspoon, along with some fresh strawberries and banana. It tasted so good! I was very pleased with myself until I looked at the ingredients on the vanilla extract after I ate my breakfast. It has sugar in it!!! Wahhhhhhhh!!!

I am so mad for not actually checking out the ingredients before putting it in the yogurt and sad that for the next 7 days I will have to eat the disgusting plain yogurt as is! Maybe I will try cinnamon next- once I have confirmed there isn't sugar in it!

This is soooo hard!!! But worth it! The true test will be this weekend!

~Monthly Stats- May 2011~

Recap of May and my progress towards my GOALS for 2011.

Total # runs- 13 -at least I am consistent!
Total # kms- 75.5K lowest month this year but I was taking a break from HM training
2011 Total # kms- 479.7K

Best run- Tied between my 10K PR race AND 6K with Rose- she pushed me and made me realize that I can run faster than I think which gave me confidence doing into my 10K race AND my first Hashing experience!
Worst run- 9K run with the fam on the long weekend- mosquitoes, faint and warm. Boo!
Total # races- 1- Calgary Scotiabank Jugo Juice 10K where I got a PR! Woot woot!
Total # non-run workouts- 4- not acceptable. June will be different!
Total # books read this month- 0.5- I am about half way through The Hunger Games. It is a great book but I am finding it hard to make time to read. Maybe if I had a more comfy patio lounger... (O.M.G. I just ruined the ending of the book when I looked up the wiki link!! Darn!!)
Eating Habits- 3.75/5 This month was a lot better for eating. I decided to change my eating habits and not eat any sugar for about a month. That didn't go that well (willpower? Where are you?), so now I am starting a Sugar Free Challenge for 10 days where I will have the support of other bloggers.

May Reflections
May was a great month! Taking a short break from half marathon training but still having a 10K race to train for was the best thing I could have done. The weather, while a bit wet, has been favourable for running.

I am disappointed that I didn't do more cross training during this month long hiatus. Of course this will change with my new 40 Day Challenge. I also didn't read as much- funny how I read less when I am running less!!

I also took a few days off work for a stay-cation where I was able to recharge and get a bunch of stuff done around the house, including buying a new SUV. She's so pretty! I named her Ruby.

*** May also brought the birth of my new Goddaughter!! Born May 31st at 6:02pm.

I resisted....

Several trays of these bad boys!!

Crave Cupcakes
They are to-die-for.

Why does my co-worker have to have a birthday while I am trying to go Sugar Free? It was so hard to not eat the entire tray, especially when people kept offering them to me!!

Only 8.25 days left...

~Three Things Thursday~

1. Sugar Free Update- so far so good!! No processed sugar yesterday. I say unprocessed because I am still eating fruit. It wasn’t too bad cutting out sugar, until about 1pm when I usually have some sort of sugary thing - mint, granola bar, or honey in my tea, to give me a boost to get through the last few hours of work.
One of my co-workers has been going sugar and processed foods-free for a few months now so she told me some ways that she deals with the cravings. Mostly just to remind yourself that the sugar won't help you towards your goal and not worth it in the long term. Hopefully they will go away in a couple days.

Also, plain yogurt is disgusting! Even with banana and flax seed I can barely choke it down. I am going to try putting some cinnamon in it to see if that makes a difference! Too bad I can’t have honey!

2. Picture taking- I tried to take some self-portraits after my run last night but I suck!! They were either too bright or blurry when I used the self timer. Me thinks I have to pull out the manual and learn to properly use it. I am sure I have the settings all messed up. Any tips?

3. Last night’s run- Day #1 of my 40 Day Challenge and Day #2 of the clinic. It ended up being a super small group because of the monsoon rain fall!! About 10 minutes before we left the house, the skies opened up and water came down like Niagara Falls! It was crazy! The drain on our street could barely keep up. It kept coming down the entire drive to the RR and still didn’t let up when we got to the store. After waiting about 15 minutes we decided to just go out and run a couple laps around the lake to get our 3K in.

I ran with Rose again. Since we were trying to get the run done as fast as possible, and were only doing 3K I tried to push the pace as much as I could. Why does Rose have to make it look so effortless?

1K- 5:37
2K- 5:57
3K- 5:48

Total Distance- 3K
Total Time- 17:22
Average Pace- 5:47

I definitely noticed that I slowed down on the 2nd K as I could no longer keep up to speedy Rose. I am soooo happy that I managed a decent pace well under 6:00 min!!

When the run was done I was just soaking wet. Even my shirt under my jacket was drenched. I was pretty close to puking which hubby was happy about (he thinks I run slower than my potential- which may or may not be true!).

The best part? As soon as we got back in the car the rain stopped, the sky was blue and the sun was shining!! Figures! At least we didn't have to water the grass or garden last night!

Sugar Free Challenge Begins

Day 1

For 10 days I will attempt to go Sugar Free in all my meals and snacks. I don't expect to lose tons of weight in the next 10 days but I do hope to feel better and not crave sugar all the time.

Breakfast- yogurt, banana, flax seed, coffee with cream and water.

Yes, I eat at my desk...

40 Day Challenge

One thing I know about working out is that it makes me feel amazing. Those endorphins just run through my body and I feel like I can do anything. Sure there are bad workouts but there are way more good ones.

I have decided to follow in Chic Runner’s footsteps and start a 40 Day Challenge for myself (because I apparently like challenges…). For 40 days straight I will work out at least once a day. My workouts can include running, biking, yoga, swimming and strength training. I have to do one of these things for at least 20 minutes every single day starting June 1st until July 10th.

I have been finding that when I train hard for a half marathon that my cross training falls to the wayside. No more! I have a sprint triathlon in August that I don’t want to just get through- I want to kill my time from last year!! I have been majorly slacking off in the biking/swimming department and I think this challenge is the perfect way to get me back on track.

So if you are interested in doing a 40 Day Challenge let me know so I can help cheer you on!! Doesn’t matter when you start.
