Half Marathon #5= DONE!

The Harvest Half Marathon exceeded my expectations! I knew it was going to be a gorgeous course but I never expected the race to go as well as it did! I'll write a full report up with pictures once I get them from my "personal" photographers aka instructor/pacer/running buddies.

I proved that "I CAN DO THIS!" even with my lack of long runs. I finished a solid race in 2:29:34, just barely meeting my unspoken goal time of 2:30. Not my fastest half, but not my slowest either. Actually- right smack in the middle!

Before the race- in the dark!

I Can Do This!

I'm a little anxious about tomorrow's race but I'm trying to push those bad thoughts out and replace them with positive thoughts! I CAN DO THIS! Now to decide what to wear.

Audrey is currently on running buddy probation. She didn't cry during my run with her on Wednesday night (6K) but she did cry the whole way home! Poor pumpkin!

Hubby mentioned to me the other night that his co-worker's daughter went in for her 18m check up and they found she has 2 infected ears. No symptoms other than poor sleep. Now I am all worried that Audrey has an ear infection! I think I might try to take her to a walk-in clinic to ease my worries.

Do I have something on my forehead?

This weekend will include more packing (my mom's house), hopefully a long nap and an ice bath!

We have a problem...

The last three runs, Audrey has not been a happy camper. Shit!! This is not good! Hubby kept having to pull over and re-insert her soother, adjust her blanket, anything to make her stop crying last night. Ugh!!

I think the runs in the evening are just getting to be too long, therefore too close to her bed time. The Sunday runs are tough because they are long but also starting so early they throw the schedule off a bit. If things don't improve soon we are going to have to take turns running with the group so one of us can stay home with Audrey. Makes me sad since I love running with the group but it's not a great run when Audrey is crying through it. Let's hope she cooperates for tonight's run!

Sorry- I don't have any pictures of Audrey crying in the Chariot but I got the pictures off Hubby's phone from our walk on the weekend.

Super baby!!

Big smiles!

Love the fall colours

******

So we got rid of cable last year since we weren't watching much TV. We do have Netflix but haven't watched much of that either! I do LOVE Mad Men though.

Also, I always loved Glee and when I heard something on the radio (to do with Britney Spears) I decided to look up the episode online. I'm addicted again! Not sure when I am going to find time to watch it but I have to now! Hooked! I have to catch up on last season though.

*****

I got my race package yesterday (a friend picked it up for me) and I'm actually getting excited for the race! Sure, I'm not as prepared as I would have liked but I love the route. I used to live right by Fish Creek and ran there a lot when I was first running so I'm looking forward to running in my old stomping grounds again! I haven't done this exact route before but I've either biked or ran quite a bit of it.

I just hope that both my and Audrey's colds are gone before then so we can start sleeping properly and I am well rested. I sorta have some goals for myself but really I just want to finish this race without beating myself up too much and possibly enjoy it!

Audrey: 7 Months

6 Months
5 Months

Sleep- We started sleep training at 6months and while the first week was tough, she caught on and we had a couple weeks of either sleeping through the night or only one wake up. It was amazing to feel well rested again and Audrey was so much happier. Then she got a cold... and all hell broke loose. We are back to 3-4 wake ups a night. Things will go back to normal when she's better right? Just in time for more teeth probably.

Eating-  This girl loves food! She's happiest when either she or someone else is shovelling food into her mouth! Most recently she has tried: chicken, prunes, apple sauce, mashed potatoes, apple, and banana. She loves it all! She is usually having solids twice a day now- breakfast and dinner.

We had to move Milo's food and water since Audrey was constantly dropping either food or her sippy cup into his food or water dish! Poor guy would be eating food and suddenly he would be bombed with a sippy cup and food would go flying.

Milestones- Another big month for milestones! Audrey has learned to army crawl so we installed a baby gate to protect her from the stairs. She has been getting up on her knees so crawling is going to happen really soon. Time to start buying locks for the cabinets!

She has also learned to blow raspberries which is just about the cutest thing ever! Oh and she now sits up all the time with no problems.

Playing- Still obsessed with getting everything in her mouth. She loves my Blackberry and I keep secretly (or not so secretly!) hoping that she ruins it with her drool so I can get an iPhone sooner! Sophie is still the best thing ever and she loves all her stuffed animals.

Weight/Clothes- No weigh-in since last month so I'm not sure how much she weighs. She still fits into some 3-6m clothes, probably even better if she didn't have a big cloth diaper butt but she is mostly wearing 6-9m or 6-12m clothes. I hate packing up the clothes she grows out of but luckily she has bigger, cuter clothes to grow into!

Personality- She has one of my not-so-great traits- impatience! She's also a Drama Queen but I have no idea where she gets that from ;) She's pretty awesome!

Audrey's Current Favourite Things- food, water bottles, Mom's Blackberry and Sophie the Giraffe.

Now I'm serious- quit growing up!!

~If my Hubby asks, I'm Sleeping!~

Last night was another sleepless night- mostly due to my own insomnia. Add a few Audrey wake ups in there and I'm lucky if I got 3 hours total. Hubby told me to sleep when Audrey naps today. So I'm writing this in my sleep ;)

I caught the Mom Cold on Thursday so I spend the weekend trying to recover from that! Holy heck did it ever knock me on my butt! I am generally a pretty healthy person, which I always attribute to lots of sleep. Well lack of sleep= reduced immune system= sick Nicole :( Trying to take care of a little one who is also sick is tough.

Luckily, Audrey has a kick ass Dad who loves to hang out with her so I was able to get some extra rest. I'm still feeling pretty crappy but apparently life still goes on.

Friday we ordered in Sushi which was a nice treat! I love sushi! I also started reading Bloom which is a bad book to read when you are already feeling emotional! Good book so far but I think I've gone through a Kleenex box already!

A short interruption for pictures...

I just love this two teeth grin!

Sophie has great legs!

Hi Milo!
(He was checking out what she was eating)

Yummy pumpkin

I want some coffee too, Mom!

Saturday we had zero plans. Do you know how great that feels, especially when you are sick? Amazing! We went to the garden store to pick up a few things and then got some ice cream and went for a 1.5hr walk around Bowness Park. Such a gorgeous day and being outside made me feel a bit better.

Crap, I took pictures with hubby's iPhone of our walk but I obviously can't ask him to send them to me since I'm sleeping!! Haha! I'll update later...

Sunday I hoped to meet up with our Running group to do 10-16K but after another sleepless night and this butt kicking cold I just couldn't do it. We also had my Step Dad's memorial in the afternoon. It was an emotional day.

With my half marathon in less than a week, I knew I needed to get out for a longest run so at 8pm I set out. I sure wasn't expecting the sun to set so quickly- how did fall creep up on me so soon? After my first 4K I had to stop at home to pick up my headlamp since running in the dark, with no street or house lights in some areas is not fun (or safe). I managed to squeeze out just under 9K before I decided that it was time to quit. My body felt fine but running in the dark at 9pm by myself was a little uncomfortable. Heck- 9K is better than none!

Ok- I'm really going to to sleep now!

~Three Things Thursday~

1. Treadmill- We decided to give Audrey a rest day (tough life!) so I did my 6K run on the treadmill after she went to bed. Thanks to "How I Met Your Mother" I got through it.

2. Baby colds suck!! Poor thing has a runny nose, dry cough and obviously in discomfort. The first thing affected is sleep. We were making so much progress and now it's gone to sh!t. Used to be able to put her down sleepy but awake- nope, now need rocking and nursing. Used to wake once or twice in the night (ok for the last 2 weeks!) but now it's once every 2 hours. Babies should be exempt from sickness! Hopefully it won't last long and everything will go back to normal.

Poor little sickie!
It isn't affecting her appetite despite her serious face!

Happy in spite of her cold

3. Santa Shuffle- So far I have convinced Cori to sign up for the 5K I mentioned yesterday. Still working on Leigh but I'm sure she'll cave and sign up! I'm all signed up and ready to train for a fast 5K! Very excited!

On My Mind...

Speed
...while running, not driving!

I really want to get faster and I think this is the winter to do it. I love training for halfs because I can't fake those races (although I sure am trying to this training round- missing all my long runs! Tsk tsk!) and I have a great group of people to run with. But I want to get faster in my 5K and 10K distances too. I want to break 30 minutes in the 5K and 1 hour in the 10K. I know I can do it but I need to put in the speed training. I think I will do most of it on the treadmill this winter, unless we get some good weather so I'm not falling on the ice and hurting myself. When do you introduce speed training into your training?

So now I have to start looking at races and recruiting fellow racers!

Oh I found a 5K on December 1st that gives a freakin awesome medal!! I'm going to sign up now!! Can't beat the price! This is going to be my sub 30 min 5K (barring no crazy icy blizzard conditions which is quite possible). Leigh- wanna sign up too?? Anyone else??

Santa Shuffle 5K Medal

Chariot Running

Speaking of speed, I had a 4K Chariot PR yesterday since Audrey decided to share with the whole world how she felt about the run! As we get towards the end of the clinic, the week days runs get longer. We were supposed to do 6K after our guest speaker which ran over so we didn't start running till after 7pm. I think it's just starting to get a little too late for her to be out there when she has a bedtime of around 8pm.

So I cut the run short and booted it back to my car so we could go home. During the night I could hear her coughing and her breathing sounded congested. Poor baby has a full on cold now. Perhaps that's why she was so grumpy last night? Either way, we cancelled swimming today and shall see if she's feeling a bit better to go for a run tonight.

*******

iPhone

I really want an iPhone. I'm so sick of my crapberry and I want to be able to use all those cool apps. It's just such a versatile phone which the crapberry is not. So do I wait for the iPhone 5 or get the 4S? Sure the 5 has a bigger screen, slightly better camera, etc etc etc. but are those things really worth the extra $$?

Unfortunately, I'm not eligible for a phone upgrade for awhile so I have to pay the early upgrade fee which is currently $182. Barf!! I can get an iPhone 4 for free (after the early upgrade fee), the 4S for $79 or the 5 for $179 (16GB). I think the decision is to wait until Christmas when the early upgrade fee will be closer to $100 but even then $300 for the 5 seems $$$! Maybe the 5 will turn out to be a dud and then the decision will be easy and cheaper to get the 4S!

Anyone have any thoughts to help me in my decision making?

********

Books

Finally started reading some books that aren't parenting related. I just finished the Fifty Shades trilogy (entertaining read) and the Sister Wives book- it's okay. I'm now going to read Bloom and Then Came You. Loving Goodreads! Great way to keep track of the books I want to read, the books I have read and the books to stay away from!! Haha!

Feel free to recommend a book or two for me to read! Not Star Wars though... :)

~Weekend: A Long Run & Packing~

Saturday, hubby went fishing with his Dad so Ms. Audrey and I were on our own!! My mother-in-law offered to watch her for me so I booked my first post-baby massage! It was a bit hard to find a place on short notice but it was very relaxing! I really need to do go more often since my back is just a mess.

That evening we were supposed to go to a BBQ and I had a girls' night afterwards. Hubby didn't get home until later and I really didn't want to mess with Audrey's bed time since we have been working so hard on sleep training so we bailed on the BBQ. Then I was just too tired to make myself decent looking to go out so I skipped on the girls' night. Pretty lame but I knew that we had a big day on Sunday and I wanted us all to be well-rested!

Sunday was our big 18K run around the Glenmore Reservoir. My longest run so far this training session had been 12K so I was in desperate need of some mileage before my race in 2 weeks! This is a great route- very scenic, with lots of variation in terrain. Flat in some spots and hilly in others.

I ran with Wendy and Amanda at a comfortable pace. I wasn't pushing myself since this was a big jump in distance. I brought my iPod but didn't end up needing it. The route ended up being short (I thought it would be!) so we did about 16.5K which I was totally fine with! My legs definitely felt sore towards the end but not in pain so that's reassuring that I won't die come race day!

Once I made it back to our starting point I found out that Audrey was not a very good running partner that morning! She screamed for about half of the run!! Hubby kept stopping to feed her some mum mums (rice baby cracker) but he forgot the banana that was in the car. I probably should have fed her just before we left for the run. Oops!!

In the afternoon, we went over to my Mom's to help her pack her house since she sold it. What a job!! I had to clean out my old bedroom- turns out I am a bit of a pack rat!! I had report cards from junior high and high school...Papers from University...Boxes and boxes of stuff! I brought home a closet full of gowns- grad and formal dresses! Some I will keep and some I will donate. Goodwill received a lot of good clothes and shoes from moi!

**********************

This weekend, Audrey was working hard on moving around. She army crawls- pulling herself with her arms while dragging her legs. She has figured out how to get on her knees but not how to move them so she goes forward. She practices plank- getting on her toes!! It's so cute but also scary how quickly she is learning this.

On the knees!

"Oh fun ball!"

"Crap! I dropped it and it rolled away!"

"I can get it"

Scooch...scooch...scooch

"I got it!"

See Alison- I wear white after Labour Day too!! Cuz I'm cool like you!! :)

~Three Things Thursday~

1. Audrey is at such a fun age right now!! She smiles and giggles at everything. She has started scooching around- mostly backwards, so I had to run out and buy baby gates to be prepared when she starts crawling. She gets stuck places and I laugh! Such a bad mom but it's too funny!

Happy girl on the swings!

2. I had to do something about Audrey's horrible night time sleep. I did what I said I would never do and sleep trained. It was a rough week but finally she is sleeping for longer stretches and even slept through the night twice! I feel so much better and actually have the energy to play with her during the day.  She is happy in the morning and so much more rested!

3. We did speed training on Tuesday with our clinic. I hurt so badly!! My legs, arms, and abs are screaming at me! I am worried for this weekend's long run since I have been so delinquent in my long runs (Thanks for the work Nikki!). I have a race in just over 2 weeks and my longest run has been 12K. I'm screwed! I know I can do it but it won't be fast or pretty. Serves me right...

Good news is that the long run on Sunday will be around Glenmore Reservoir. Such a pretty route so surely the kilometers will just tick by and I'll be done before I know it right?

~Run for Water 10K Race Report~

Leigh mentioned this race to me a few months ago since every finisher gets a medal. Might not seem like a big deal but around here a lot of races do not give our bling unless you are one of the top 3 finishers. Even for half marathons this is often the case. Not cool for someone who likes to receive bling at the end of a race!!

This race started downtown and I figured it was the usual out and back type route that is common for races that start at this location. Well I was pleasantly surprised to find out the day before the race that it wasn't an out and back but yet a route that I had never run before (most of it). I love new routes!!

We woke up early on Saturday and Leigh found us quickly since we stick out with the Chariot!

Audrey hydrating before the race

Leigh and I

Family photo take 1

Family photo take 2

The 10K started first and both Leigh and hubby took off leaving me in their dust ;) It was pretty congested at the very beginning but by 1K it had spread out.

At 1K I pulled out my iPod even though I haven't run with music in awhile.

At 2K I was surprised at how easy the pace felt and how fast it was going by.

At 3K I started to get a stitch and had to slow it down.

By 5K I was discouraged that I was only half way there!

Around 6K? we caught up to the 5K runners and walkers who started 15 minutes after us. I felt like the only runner dodging all the walkers. For a moment I thought that maybe I went the wrong way since I couldn't see any runners ahead of me but I was still seeing kilometer markers along the route that were obviously for the 10K.

I actually didn't mind all the walkers because it gave me something else to think about other than how tired I was! At 8K the 5Kers turned over one bridge and the 10Kers continued until the next bridge. That was tough! Then we met up again on the other side of the river- just to be sent on separate pathways again! This happened about 3 times!

Finally we rounded a corner, went over another small bridge and you could see the finish line! I picked up the pace a bit but I was spent! Hubby, Audrey and Leigh were just at the side of the finish line to cheer me on! My final time was 1:06:xx. Not my greatest, but not my worst either!

Me finishing!

Audrey, me and my medal!!

I grabbed my medal, we got some food and water and hung around for a bit.

I am definitely looking forward to doing this race again next year- great route, great volunteers, great medal and great post-race food and activities!

New addition to my medal collection!

~What I did this Weekend~

Saturday was Race Day. Hubby ended up signing up when he went to pick up my race package on Friday. We were all up bright and early on Saturday morning and headed downtown for the 10K. It was a gorgeous day. Leigh found us pretty quickly so we hung out before and after the race. I'll write a full report later. Overall it was a good race that I would do again in the future.

Yay a medal!!

Pre-race family photo
Thanks Leigh!!

After a long family nap, I may or may not have run to Shopper's Drug Mart to purchase 32 chocolate bars in order to get all the bonus Optimum points in order to get $220 worth of free stuff!! I had to go to 2 different locations since my friend cleared out the first store of their chocolate bars!! The cashier thought I was nuts but I shrugged it off for Halloween candy!!

32 Big Cadbury chocolate bars!
Don't worry- they are all in the freezer now!

That evening we had a hot dog roast in the backyard. The fire pit was the best birthday present ever! Love being able to enjoy our backyard on nice summer nights. Later our neighbors and their little girl came over and we made s'mores and visited. Perfect evening!

Sunday morning we were supposed to run 18K but Audrey had a bad night so I was in no condition to go running at 8:30am. Instead we stayed in bed late and headed over to my mom's in the early afternoon. She sold her house so we are busy packing up. It's amazing how much stuff is accumulated over the years and it doesn't help that she has a big house either. I also left a lot of stuff there when I moved out- high school and university papers, tons of clothes, some collectibles and a bunch of books. I had 4 garbage bags and a box of stuff for Goodwill! It's so hard deciding what to keep and what to chuck. I decided to keep a bunch of stuff so that I can scan it and then get rid of the hard copy. I have 2 boxes of pictures to go through as well! Just another reminder to purge often and buy only the things that I really want and/or need.

After Miss Audrey went to bed, I ran out to Shoppers to redeem my 95,000 points for $220 worth of useful stuff! I snagged some makeup, diapers, baby wipes, 2 cases of water, some baby food, soothers, diaper cream, nail polish, face cleansing products, Tylenol, toys, baby bowls, and cleaning products. Not a bad deal!! Love spending free money!

$220 worth of free stuff! Thanks Shoppers!

It was an exhausting weekend but lots of fun too!

What? It's Race Day Tomorrow???

Fingers and toes crosses that Audrey (and I) sleep well tonight so that I am not a zombie at tomorrow's 10K. It will take every ounce of willpower to get me to that finish line but I should be rewarded with a shiny new medal!! I don't really have any goals other than to finish and not get a PW. As long as I don't get a side stitch I think I should be good.

**********

Today is my nephew's 17th birthday!! Crazy crazy!! He's growing up to be such a nice boy! And handsome too...

Love!

*******

So I may have missed hill training on Wednesday, but I sure made up for it yesterday! Kim and I went running in Bowmont Park and the hills there are plentiful! The pathway was part of my last half marathon route (Big Run May 2011) and the rolling hills start at 16K. It was a character building course for sure!

We did walk a lot of the hills and pushing those chariots up is hard work! A few of the hills were pretty steep.

Dane and Audrey
(not that you can see them!)

So 8K of rolling hills is pretty good makeup for the hills I missed this week. Now I'm good and ready for tomorrow's flat 10K.

~Three Things Thursday~

1. After yesterday's post, I decided that I needed to take an updated picture of hubby's garden since the sunflowers and sweet peas are now blooming. It looks so pretty and it smells so nice (says hubby).

Sweet peas and Sunflowers blooming

Lots of sunflowers in bloom

2. Yesterday, Audrey and I had a "play date" with one of the ladies from my prenatal aqua size class, Della and her gorgeous baby girl, Skye! It was the first time the little girls met and they loved each other! They kept squealing at one another, touching each other and smiling like crazy!! It was the sweetest thing!

It was nice to catch up with Della and share stories. I sure hope our girls learn to sleep better ASAP! Maybe next time we should take the girls swimming!

"Audrey, don't scratch Skye!"

"Audrey! Look!"
And now Skye isn't looking...

"Nice head!"

"Oh a soother!!"

"How you doin?"

3. Guess who bailed on 9 Hills last night? Yup, that would be me! Hubby was golfing so I would have had to push Audrey myself and that just wasn't too appealing! I was exhausted from little sleep the night before and Audrey and I were napping when we were supposed to leave the house. I'm really not that sad about it!

Good thing I have a run date with Kim and Dane (Audrey's betrothed!) today. Plus I have a 10K race on Saturday so I should be tapering right?? Haha!
